The Duke home page had been in a version of the same design for nearly a decade.
Since returning to Duke in 2021 I had been on a quest to redesign it.
Make Duke.edu a destination, not just for prospective students but for anyone who might be interested in the type of work being done at Duke.
We hoped to launch in August of 2025, but funding cuts, shifting university priorities and, eventually, a reorganization which included a voluntary separation for me and members of my team delayed the project.
The new version of duke.edu launched in mid-December, 2025. It is close to my vision, but lacked some of the narrative structure I had hoped for, as that required dedicated strategic content resources that were not available after the reorganization.
This had been my project. With the support of leadership, I have set the strategy, driven the philosophy, directed the process, envisioned the experience and led a team in production of all of the components.
The redesign of duke.edu had been put on hold and pushed back and not-quite-ready-to-start-ed itself almost out of existence. So the first thing we needed to nail down was who decides what when.
Components from the pattern were used to mockup the structure of a "Theme". This would bring a new content focus for the site every few months.
The design allowed for an enhanced sub-page experience so we could maintain brand integrity across all aspects of "What is Duke"

If you are curious about process, deliverables, research or any other part of this project, I'm happy to talk.
